The sun is the light that arrives; bounce is what the walls and floor give back. A shadow is black when there is no bounce in it — lifting bounce puts light into the shadow rather than painting it grey, which is what a room does.

18 mm takes a whole room in; 300 mm flattens a run of cupboards the way a catalogue does. A stop is a doubling of light. Range is how far apart the darkest and lightest parts are printed: under 100% lifts the blacks and brings the whites down, over 100% pushes them apart.
